No matter your skill level, going back to basics is the fastest way to improve. The SAVE Strokes Range Routine (Speed, Alignment, Visualization, Execution) isn’t just another range session — it’s a system that locks in fundamentals and builds confidence. Here’s how to use it, and why it works.
Before you hit, stand behind the Target and pick a spot. If the target doesn’t feel right, move on until you find one that gives you confidence. Then visualize the ball’s flight — see it traveling straight, hitting the target, and reacting as you want.
Why it works: Your brain performs better when it already “sees” the outcome. This mental image helps coordinate your swing automatically. Standing behind also gives you the best perspective for proper alignment.
Once you’ve visualized the shot, step in. Set the ball down, square your feet, hips, and shoulders, and use an intermediate spot (like a piece of grass or Tee) to lock in your aim line.
Why it works: Most poor shots don’t come from bad swings, but from bad alignment. By double-checking, you train yourself to start the ball on the correct path.
Start with a wedge and pick a target about one-third of your max distance. Swing at 30–50% of your normal pace.Don’t worry if you fly it a little long or come up short. The goal is solid contact and rhythm. After 3–5 shots, move the target to three-quarter distance, then 3/4 to full power and progress through your bag.
Why it works: Practicing at controlled speed teaches you distance control and eliminates tension. Solid contact at slower pace builds consistency before you add power.
When you’re ready, trust your setup, trust your picture, and take the swing. Don’t steer the shot or second-guess mid-swing — just execute with commitment.
Why it works: Hesitation is the enemy of good golf. A confident, committed stroke almost always produces better results than a tentative one.
S – Speed: Start small, control tempo, build distance.
A – Alignment: Always check aim from behind before stepping in.
V – Visualization: Picture the target and the flight.
E – Execution: Step in and commit fully to the swing.
Power comes from your Right Side (right side for right-handed golfers, left side for left-handed golfers).
Always finish with your body facing the aim point.
Visualize a crisp strike and a strong finish directly toward your target.
Grip pressure ruins strokes — check if you feel tense. If so, you’re gripping too tight.
A good rule: the shorter the shot, the lighter the grip.
Use this with SAVE and you’ll start saving strokes Quickly.
Grip pressure is fluid — it changes by distance, club, and shot length. But one rule never changes: if your body feels tight, lighten up.
Work through your wedge, irons, hybrids – woods, and finally driver using SAVE. Don’t take shortcuts. Within a few sessions, you’ll notice:
Cleaner, more consistent contact.
Straighter ball flight.
More confidence standing over the ball.
